Omoa and its Spanish fortress
Omoa, one of the oldest towns in the country, played an important role in Honduras history. Several centuries ago Spanish colonist built the fortress of San Fernando de Omoa to protect the coast and silver shipments on their way to Spain, from the constant attacks of British pirates. To find another fort as important as this one, you would have to travel all the way to Cartagena de Indias, in Colombia or to the Gulf of Mexico
Puerto Cortes
Founded in 1524 as the villa de Puerto Caballos today Puerto Cortes is perhaps the most important point along the coastline of Honduras and Central America. it is trough here that most imported and exported goods are embarked. Alongside the industrial city of San Pedro Sula it has become the most significant economic growth area of Honduras.
